G’day

I’m Hamish and this is my digital garden - an informal blog and collection of thoughts, complete with the connections between them. The idea of a digital garden is far from my idea and I’m using the software “Quartz” to achieve it.

Feel free to check it out here.

What is this? Why?

There are two answers to these questions, one is that I simply wanted a place to write down my ideas on various things as a device for formulating my own thoughts more clearly. The second, is that I needed somewhere to informally coalesce and publish my thoughts on the concept of flowerworld.

Flowerworld

In the year of our lord 2022, I coined the term flowerworld, and have since explored and explained it many times, but produced nothing concrete to disseminate it broadly. I have repeatedly set the bar too high - believing that the only way to do the idea justice were big ambitious philosophical projects, or essay collections, or even an entire publishing house.

Most simply, the term flowerworld is a catch-all for physical reality being something worth striving toward back from being damned and suspended within digital reality. It comes directly from the negation of a now out-dated word “meatspace”, which is also a noun describing physical reality in contract to digital reality, however I believe it made physical reality sound far too gross. Physical reality is not a fleshy hell constrained by meat - it is the world where the flowers are.

I am writing this with quite a bit of urgency - I believe these feelings and these terms are extremely pertinent, and, most importantly, I want to clarify my own opinions regarding these things for my own sake.

My interests

I have a lot of digital interests on top of philosophical ones, and find especially great interest in where they intersect.

  • I am currently interested in creating physical media players and personal devices on the STM32 architecture using the Rust embassy project.
  • I collect physical media and now exclusively listen to and consume music I physically and digitally own - within reason. This is done on my iPod Classic.
  • I am a full-stack developer in my profession, however I do not have much to say about that at the moment. I am interested in Typescript standards and DevEx in Neovim, which I may write about at some point.
  • I am currently learning acoustic guitar and singing in the style of Johnny Cash and Bob Dylan.
